After a long day of exploring Beijing on foot, I was aching all over and decided to treat myself to a massage at Kocoon Spa, conveniently located within Sofitel Beijing Central where I was staying. While the prices here are definitely on the steeper side—my 1-hour body massage cost 880 RMB, easily more than double what you'd pay elsewhere—the experience and service helped justify the premium.
Since standalone foot massages weren’t available, I opted for the full body massage and was attended to by Lily, who was not only professional but also proficient in English, making the whole process feel seamless. One of the standout moments happened even before the massage began. As I lay face down on the massage bed, Lily waved her hands just below the headrest to let me inhale the aroma of the oil—something I’d never experienced before, and it was a lovely touch.
She also incorporated Tibetan singing bowls and soft bell sounds at the start of the session to help my body relax—again, a unique and thoughtful gesture. The massage itself was firm, precise, and delivered with great technique. Halfway through, when I was asked to turn over, Lily offered me tea to soothe my dry throat before continuing, which I found incredibly considerate.
Post-massage, I was served more tea along with some biscuits while settling the bill. It’s clear they take great pride in caring for their guests, and all the small thoughtful details explain why this spa has won numerous awards and holds the title of Beijing’s #1 spa.

I recently had a scooter accident and needed stitches. The hospital staff were thorough and attentive, performing X-rays to ensure my knee was unharmed and to check for any foreign objects in another cut. Two other hospitals with high level doctors confirmed that Beijing United initially performed the wrong surgery on my hip. We went to the hospital for our 15 yr old with major food poisoning. We tried to go to another one of their locations but their clinic location would not take patients under 18 yrs old so we went to this location. We arrived at 5pm and left at 8pm; surprisingly fast compared to hospitals in the USA. Brett Chen was our doctor; there was another doctor that we preferred but seemed to be getting off work when we arrived. Brett was professional and clear. The other doctor came to speak with us as we were checking out and mentioned that he was highly suspicious that it was salmonella but that he needed to see the test results in about 24 hrs.
They did however behave like an emergency room and wanted to talk about a CAT scan for ruling our any issues with his appendix. We asked to wait for the blood and stool test before jumping to CAT scan. The hospital was very clean. Staff was very patient and kind at a stressful time.

I’ve been there several times for a variety of services—hair treatments, styling, makeup, and facials—and I’ve always left happy. I was impressed with my first visit to Catherine de France in April, I had such a great experience with Ken who is a talented and knowledgeable hair stylist. Ken patiently listened to my concerns about previous dyeing experiences and suggested creative ideas to solve the problèm. He was able to fix my damaged hair from my previous dyeing experience. I popped into Catherine de France a few weeks ago and was met by Ken and assistants. My hair is a challenge for any hairdresser on a good day (dry, straight and greying!!!), but Ken was totally unphased and he talked me through what might best work for me. He put me totally at ease and I was delighted with my results. Loved the cut he gave me and I will definitly be back next year when I return to Beijing for a Keratin treatment!
